Breitling (Instagram), a name long synonymous with precision and innovation, marks its 140th anniversary by unveiling the Navitimer GMT, Automatic 41, and a limited-edition self-winding Cosmonaute. These new releases pay homage to the brand’s rich history in aviation and space exploration while exhibiting the best of modern design and functionality. As part of the celebration, superstars Erling Haaland and Giannis Antetokounmpo lead the Navitimer campaign, underscoring Breitling’s ongoing influence and legacy.

Breitling’s journey began in 1884, and since then it has been at the forefront of horological advancements. From the invention of the first chronograph and a computational slide rule to pioneering navigational tools for air, land, and sea, Breitling has consistently pushed the boundaries of watchmaking. This year, the brand celebrates its storied past with a focus on two iconic models: the Navitimer and the Cosmonaute.

Navitimer Automatic 41

The Navitimer, introduced in 1952, quickly became a favourite among pilots for its chronograph and slide rule bezel, essential for flight calculations. The circular slide rule allowed pilots to make critical calculations, such as rate of climb and fuel consumption mid-air and was an instant hit. The new Navitimer GMT and Automatic 41 continue this legacy, offering a streamlined design while retaining the iconic elements that made the original a classic.

The Navitimer GMT 41 and the Automatic 41 combine classic design with modern functionality. The watch features a central 24-hour scale for tracking a second time zone, making it ideal for frequent travelers. Available in stainless steel and 18k red gold, the pieces are available with dials in black, silver, and ice blue, offering a range of options to suit different styles. The watch is powered by the Breitling Caliber 32, a self-winding mechanical movement with a 42-hour power reserve.

The Navitimer Automatic 41 offers a clean and elegant design, omitting the chronograph and instead focusing on a balanced, uncluttered dial. Available in stainless steel, two-tone, and full gold versions, the Automatic 41 is available with dials in black, blue, silver, ice blue, and green. The use of responsibly mined gold in the full gold versions aligns with Breitling’s commitment to sustainability, making these models not just a style statement, but also an ethical choice. Both models feature a notched bezel, alternating polished and brushed finishes, and options for alligator leather straps ensure comfort and versatility.

Navitimer Cosmonaute

The Cosmonaute holds a special place in Breitling’s history as the first Swiss wristwatch in space. In 1962, astronaut Scott Carpenter wore the Cosmonaute during his Mercury-Atlas 7 mission, and the watch featured a unique 24-hour dial to distinguish day from night in space.

To celebrate this historic event, Breitling introduces a limited-edition Cosmonaute with a self-winding chronograph movement, the Breitling Manufacture Caliber B12. Limited to 250 pieces, this watch features an 18k red gold case, a deep green dial, and golden numerals. The black alligator leather strap and the “One of 250” caseback engraving add to its exclusivity.

Giannis Antetokounmpo

Breitling’s 140th-anniversary celebration extends beyond watch releases. The brand has launched the “NAVITIMER – FOR THE JOURNEY” campaign, featuring the Navitimer Squad. Made up of basketball superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Misty Copeland, explorer Bertrand Piccard, and Oscar-winning actor and producer Charlize Theron, this incredibly talented team now includes football sensation Erling Haaland.

“I’m super proud to be representing Breitling’s icon. People are going to be surprised this year when they see how many ‘firsts’ Breitling has under its belt. It’s been a game changer in so many ways,” Haaland said.

Breitling’s three new pieces exemplify the brand’s dedication to innovation, heritage, and sustainability. As Breitling celebrates 140 years of firsts, these watches not only honor the past, but also pave the way for future milestones. With the icons of the Navitimer Squad leading the campaign, Breitling’s legacy continues to inspire and captivate.
