Heidi Slimane has built an instantly recognizable design signature, and since his appointment at Celine, the designer has brought his famed style and aesthetic to the French House. For Celine’s Homme Winter 2023 collection, Slimane took his pieces to one of Paris’ most famed nightclubs – Le Palace.

The Paris Syndrome collection fused Slimane’s menswear style codes with hedonistic joy. The collection delves into the current rediscovery of 2000’s electronic rock sounds and the Electroclash movement that is popping up across cities around the world including Paris, London, and New York. The show saw Celine pay homage to New York’s cult proto-punk band Suicide, which was formed in 1977 by Alan Vega and Martin Rev, through a punk-inspired collection.

The iconic Parisian nightclub was the ideal location. The venue played host to some of the wildest parties in the 70s and 80s, hosting Prince, Yves Saint Laurent, Karl Lagerfeld, and Andy Warhol, among other art, fashion and music personalities as it forged a unique indentity.

Then came the collection. Slimane drew inspiration from the current Y2K electroclash revival and began with tight-fitted leather pants paired with a studded leather biker jacket. This then extended to coats in tweeds and cashmere, and suits featuring short flared pants. Then came the leopard print, on silk shirts and coats. The designer paid a direct homage to the nightclub through limited-edition pieces, including a bomber jacket with rhinestone inscriptions on the back that represented the very essence of the collection.

The show, and the clothes it presented, teleported those in attendance back to the early 2000s at Le Palace. The show also saw the debut of Celine’s latest perfume, Nightclubbing. The scent is part of the French House’s Haute Perfumerie collection and, like the pieces on display, is a tribute to Le Palace’s glory years.
