Three days before Dolce & Gabbana’s SS/23 show Kim Kardashian touched down in Milan using her social media omnipresence to post a picture of herself arriving in Milan, using the hashtags #CiaoKim and #DolceGabbana. The Italian luxury house enlisted Kardashian to curate their SS/23 collections, using archival pieces from her wardrobe.
The reality star said in a press conference that she would act as a curator, selecting pieces from the house’s archive, particular the Y2K years (which if you haven’t noticed is hot on the runway right now), and the designers would rework those pieces to suit contemporary looks. The idea came when Dolce & Gabbana discovered the clothes Kim had in her collection of vintage pieces. “Some pieces that even they didn’t have in their archives,” Kim said.
Each look on the runway featured a tag that noted the year of the original piece. Corset dresses, wiggle dresses and lingerie sets were accompanied by PVC numbers and low-rise trousers dominated the collection.
A team-up between the Kardashians and Dolce & Gabbana has numerous benefits for the fashion house. The Kardashian are probably some of the most followed people on social media, boasting a combined presence of over 600 million followers. The benefits are there for all to see.
The link-up between the Kardashians and Dolce & Gabbana started in May this year, when the house offered to dress Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker, along with all the guests at their wedding ceremony in Portofino. It was then that Kim brought some of her archival looks that gave birth to the idea of her curating the collection.
The move to enlist Kim as curator of the collection may have just been a trump card for the Italian Maison. Making noise during Fashion Week is no easy task, so the controversial enlistment of the number one Kardashian may just have given the house the edge it needed in amplifying Dolce &. Gabbana during the loudest time on the fashion calendar.
