In a visionary partnership that combines cutting-edge space technology with luxury fashion, Axiom Space (Instagram) and Prada (Instagram) have unveiled the flight design of the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU). This next-generation spacesuit, designed for NASA’s Artemis III mission, will take astronauts back to the lunar surface for the first time in over 50 years. The suit not only meets the highest safety standards but it’s going to turn heads, too, thanks to Prada’s expertise. Revealed at the International Astronautical Congress in Milan, this collaboration marks a new chapter in space exploration and design innovation.
Axiom Space and Prada’s collaboration is a pioneering step toward redefining what spacesuits can be. Combining Axiom’s expertise in spaceflight systems with Prada’s mastery of materials and aesthetics, the AxEMU spacesuit represents a blend of innovation and style. As Axiom Space President Matt Ondler puts it, “We have broken the mould. The Axiom Space-Prada partnership has set a new foundational model for cross-industry collaboration, further expanding what’s possible in commercial space.”
The spacesuit was designed with both functionality and aesthetics in mind. Axiom initially showcased a dark cover layer for public viewing to conceal proprietary technology, but the final version for lunar use will feature a white outer layer. This material will protect astronauts from extreme temperatures and the abrasive lunar dust, while reflecting heat.
Prada’s role in the development of the AxEMU goes far beyond just looks. The luxury House contributed its deep knowledge of high-performance materials and advanced production techniques. According to Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada Group’s Chief Marketing Officer, “Going beyond our limits is one of the company’s values that perfectly reflects the spirit of the Prada brand and my parents’ vision. I’m very proud of the result we’re showing today, which is just the first step in a long-term collaboration with Axiom Space.”
The AxEMU spacesuit is designed to meet the extreme conditions of the lunar south pole, where temperatures can drop to the lowest extremes. Built with a flexible and adaptable architecture, the suit provides enhanced mobility, safety, and performance. Its features include advanced life support systems, cutting-edge cooling technology, and custom gloves tailored for comfort and functionality. In addition, the helmet comes equipped with special coatings to improve visibility during spacewalks.
Russell Ralston, Executive Vice President of Extravehicular Activity at Axiom Space, emphasized the importance of partnerships in space exploration. “We are pioneering a new era in space exploration where partnerships are imperative to the commercialization of space,” he said.
As the AxEMU suit nears the final stages of development, it stands as a testament to the power of collaboration. From the fashion-forward innovations by Prada to Axiom Space’s advanced engineering, this spacesuit not only sets a new standard for lunar exploration but also opens the door to future possibilities for cross-industry innovation. And who says you can’t look great as you trek across the lunar surface?
