Swiss watchmaker Vacheron Constantin will reissue it’s legendary 222, which was launched in 1977 and marked the 222nd anniversary of the Maison. This is no ordinary watch, and the number 222, in the world of watchmaking, marks a turning point in the history of the Manufacture. It marks Maison’s foray into the world and design of sporty-chic watch silhouettes.
While there are various 222 references, the Reference 44018 in 18K gold that features a 37mm diameter will be the one the Maison brings back to life.
“Above and beyond its status as an icon, the 222 watch is a wonderful tribute to the work of our designers and engineers, and an illustration of their ability to perpetuate the avant-garde spirit of our Maison.” – said Louis Ferla, CEO of Vacheron Constantin
For collectors and people who are serious about watches, the 222 stands as a symbol of an era, as well as a watershed in the history of the Maison. When Vacheron Constantin marked its anniversary with the 222, 45 years ago, it had turned the wheels of time, creating a sports watch that had not been used much until that point. Sports models, back then, were designed for active people, with professional titles like pilots and divers. Luxury watches were used as dress watches.
“I wanted to design an elegant sporty timepiece while striking the right balance between these two elements to fit in with Vacheron Constantin’s classic and refined universe.” Said Jorg Hysek, who designed the 222.
The updated iteration of 222 will feature a Jumbo version in 18k 3N yellow gold. The watch will keep with the spirit of the Historiques collection but will feature the latest technological advancements to optimize the watches’ reliability and comfort. The watch will also feature a 40-hour power reserve. The Calibre 2455/2 is specifically designed for this model and features the original 222 logo engraving while being cradled by a fluted motif echoing the bezel. The case back will have an opening to reveal the calibre. On the dial, the vintage AUTOMATIC inscription can be read, while the date window is offset from the outer rim of the dial to enhance its readability.
The watch will be exclusively available from Vacheron Constantin boutiques.
