The Artistic Director of Couture and Womenswear for Fendi (Instagram), Kim Jones, drew his inspiration for his latest collection from the House’s home city. In the heart of Rome, where the ordinary transforms into the extraordinary, and history blends seamlessly with the present, the Fendi Spring/Summer 2024 Womenswear collection was born. Jones believes that true luxury lies in the elegance of ease and the liberation from external judgments. He envisions women who dress for themselves, embracing their unique style and confidence.
As this first look shows, the collection is a picturesque walk through the streets of Rome, capturing the essence of Roman freedom in fashion. It celebrates imperfection as a form of human perfection and cherishes the comfort and quiet confidence that clothing and accessories bring to the wearer. The theme of duality, a characteristic trait of Fendi, runs through the collection. It effortlessly combines masculine tailoring and materials like fine kid mohair with the fluidity of silks and knits.
Traditional elements like the curtain waistband of tailored trousers are reinvented, revealing their construction and blending seamlessly with sinuous knitwear. The transition from evening wear to day-to-day attire is seamless, with washed silk evening dresses finding a place in everyday life. Soft shearling strips, using Fendi’s famed Featherlike construction, are transformed into summer skirt suits with work shirts.
Feminine elegance meets masculine utility, ensuring practicality and comfort without compromising on style. Fendi’s rich heritage is evident throughout the collection, with recurring codes and motifs harking back to the House’s beginnings. The Selleria stitch, an ode to Roman master saddlers, adorns leather bags and garments, evolving into metal thread hardware on shoes.
The iconic FF logo takes on a playful and abstract form in jewellery and clothing, showcasing bold colour-blocking in intarsia leathers and strapless knit dresses. The colour palette, known for its off-kilter charm, pays homage to Karl Lagerfeld’s Women’s Spring/Summer 1999 collection for the House.
In Silvia Venturini Fendi’s bag collection a diverse array of styles, sizes, materials, and techniques cater to different wearers. Fendi Peekaboo, Baguette, Origami, and First bags join the new Flip, a versatile shopper that can fold into a clutch. The collection emphasizes that there isn’t just one Fendi woman but many, encouraging each to embrace her unique style and the idea of Roman freedom.
The show’s soundtrack, featuring Dinah Washington’s “This Bitter Earth” and Max Richter’s “On the Nature of Daylight,” added a melodic touch to this captivating journey through Rome.
