For Ferragamo (Instagram), Maximilian Davis has once again proven himself a master of this craft in this SS 2024 collection. The acclaimed designer explored and reshaped established codes, notably infusing his signature style with a refreshing, organic sense of ease. This season, his theme revolves around the delicate balance between restraint and freedom, drawing inspiration from Italian and Caribbean influences.
In this season’s offering, Davis and Ferragamo draw a fascinating parallel between Italian and Caribbean dress codes, merging them seamlessly. He captures the essence of Italian ease and the Caribbean’s relaxed charm, creating a blend of the two that somehow, whisper it, seems greater than its parts. The pieces take inspiration from Italy’s Arte Povera movement, known for juxtaposing natural materials with industrial elements, elevating the everyday through thoughtful design. The result is a wearable collection that softly murmurs of class and refinement.
“I wanted things to feel a lot lighter, both in terms of fabric and construction but also in terms of how people want to dress. There’s a familiarity I have found in the Italian way of dressing and living: an effortlessness which feels very Caribbean. The idea of doing everything at your own pace, on your own time,” Davis said in his notes. Mission accomplished.
We saw humble materials like linen and cotton transformed into pieces of art, bonded onto satins for capes or cleverly treated to mimic leather. The accessories were sculptural, wooden, polished to perfection. The silhouettes remain precise, crafted from natural fabrics.
The collection thrives on the interplay between restraint and freedom. Leather tailoring exhibits a relaxed insouciance, with a touch of wear and texture. Pristine mid-century tailoring contrasts with flowing lines. Viscose jersey drapery meets Renaissance armor with molded leather bodices and high-shine inserts. Davis’s subversive sensibility subtly weaves its way through the designs.
Footwear becomes an embodiment of Davis’s aesthetic. Nappa latex shoes and gaucho lak boots provide comfort without compromising style. Archival inspiration leads to the creation of a 3D-printed banana cage heel. Graphic lines and geometric forms define the handbags, from the contemporary classic Hug to the luxurious Fiamma shoulder bag. For men, classics like Oxfords and driver shoes receive contemporary makeovers.
A light, sun-infused collection, Ferragamo has created the perfect hybrid of Italian and Caribbean appeal.
