Some appointments feel strategic. Others feel electric. Olivier Rousteing becoming Creative Director of Rabanne belongs firmly in the second category.

Announced today, the appointment marks the beginning of a new creative era for a House that has always preferred provocation to predictability. Rabanne describes the move as the next stage in a decade of transformation, with Rousteing now tasked with carrying its subversive heritage into the future.

It is an intriguing match. Rabanne was built on the idea that fashion could be something audacious, sharper and more daring than convention allowed. Its history is tied to experimentation, innovation and a willingness to turn unexpected materials and radical ideas into objects of desire. Rousteing, meanwhile, has long understood the power of spectacle, confidence and fashion as a language of identity.

“Joining Rabanne is a tremendous honour,” Rousteing said. “This is a House that has always challenged convention, transforming bold ideas into creations that have shaped fashion history.”

That sense of emotional connection is central to how Rousteing describes the role. For him, fashion is not simply about clothing, but about “emotion, identity, and the confidence to express who we truly are.” It is a philosophy he sees as closely connected to Paco Rabanne’s enduring vision of freedom and individuality.

Under Rousteing’s direction, Rabanne plans to expand its universe through new product categories, strengthening the relationship between fashion, beauty and innovation. The ambition is not simply to refresh the runway, but to build a broader creative ecosystem around the House’s distinctive identity.

Ana Trias, President of Prestige & Fashion Brands at Puig, described Rousteing’s vision as “bold, magnetic, and deeply connected to the energy of today,” adding that his ability to create fashion centred on confidence and self-expression made him a natural choice for the role.

Rousteing’s first collection for the House will be revealed in March 2027. Until then, fashion will be watching closely. With Rousteing at Rabanne, subtlety may not be the point. The excitement lies in seeing just how far he is willing to push it.
