In Chanel’s latest instalment of its literary rendezvous – in the Library with – the brand brings brand ambassador Kristen Stewart to the conversation. Stewart discusses her passion for John Steinbeck’s work, as well as her admiration for the Beat Generation.
The Rendez-vous Litteraires Rue Cambon aims to bring together women writers, as well as friends of the house to discuss the theme of women’s empowerment. These women discuss the theme of empowerment through their works or the work of historical literary figures.
In this episode Stewart talks of her relationship with literature and reading, and how it impacted her as a human being, but more so as a woman. “I had a hard time with numbers growing up, but words have always been my friend,” Stewart says when asked about her relationship with reading. “My first memories of having a personal relationship with reading probably started with Where the Red Fern Grows and Pope Joan.” The actress explains how these books and others made her want to start writing herself, but also served as a solace for her in times when she felt like retreating or travelling to a far-off place.
The actress speaks of how Sapiens and Homo Deus have helped and guided her. The actress is well known for taking up cinema and movie-making instead of going to college. The book allows her to zoom out, as she explains her personality as “somebody that becomes so fixated on details and so kind of lost in them. It was cool for somebody to my hand go, ‘I think you need to step back a little.’” Stewart speaks of her inspiration through Home Deus particularly as is a brief history of tomorrow.
Like Stewart, the series has many creatives and friends of the house, including Abd Al Malik, Margot Robbie, Tilda Swinton and others.
