Alaïa, the legendary French fashion house, has unveiled its fourth collection designed by Pieter Mulier. This stunning series takes the form of an exploration of everything Alaïa stands for – its anatomy, its psychology, its soul.
The intensely introspective collection was created around a celebration of the curve, a universal shape that has come to define the essence of femininity.
The couture designs clearly draw inspiration from sculpture, with the pieces shaped directly on the body. Textures appear as if a second skin and the stunning creations are clearly also informed by not only Mulier’s personal style and vision, but also the Tunisian roots at the heart of Alaïa.
The spring/summer 23 collection was presented in Pieter Mulier’s own home in Antwerp. The clothes, like the space, are intimate, personal. As for the past two seasons, Alaïa has embraced the use of selfies to reveal the collection’s looks, creating the idea of a beautiful, seemingly spontaneous, collection that celebrates all things woman.
Taken by the models themselves, the selfies come together to reveal a whole, a collection inspired by women, and loved by women. From the house’s most emblematic silhouettes to its latest accessories, including belts, shoes and gloves, a love of the curve is apparent. History, thankfully, repeats in the form of the iconic Coeur bag and here it transforms into a minaudière in a new metal version inspired by the way a jewel catches the light.
While the house has used selfies before, this collection marks the first time that the models took their shots from backstage. The resulting collection of images shares a rare, behind-the-scenes view of the pieces, a subjective look through the eyes of the very women tasked with introducing it all to the world. It’s raw and instinctive.
