Creative Space Beirut (Instagram) and Archive Studios (Instagram) recently unveiled an inspiring showcase that highlights the transformative power of upcycling in contemporary fashion. The event, held at Archive Studios in Beirut, brought together creativity, sustainability, and craftsmanship, demonstrating how discarded designer garments gain a second life through innovative design.
Archive Studios, known for its dedication to reworking deadstock and extending the lifecycle of garments, played an essential role in this collaboration. By giving surplus designer pieces a new purpose, Archive Studios promoted a more mindful approach to fashion—one that values longevity, creativity, and responsible consumption. Their support of emerging designers and educational institutions continues to make a significant impact in the push toward a more sustainable industry.
Creative Space Beirut, a free fashion design school, emphasizes not only technical skill development but also critical thinking and social responsibility. By fostering a curriculum that blends conceptual and experiential learning, Creative Space Beirut prepares students for the evolving fashion industry, ensuring they are equipped with the tools to make a lasting impact.
The project was a collaboration between students from Creative Space Beirut and Archive Studios and aimed to repurpose unsold designer pieces into unique, wearable creations. The upcycling process began with students carefully selecting surplus garments from Archive Studios, choosing pieces that spoke to them personally and hold potential for reinvention. Each garment underwent a meticulous deconstruction process, where students analysed its construction, fabric, and design details to determine the best approach for transformation. Through research, experimentation, and guided workshops, they reimagined the garments, integrating their personal aesthetics while preserving distinctive elements of the originals. The final steps involved intricate sewing, embellishing, and applying finishing touches like embroidery and dyeing to ensure each piece is both innovative and functional.
All this was led by designer and Creative Space Beirut alumnus Amir Al Kasm, who played a crucial role as an instructor and mentor. He provided expert guidance on deconstruction and reconstruction techniques, refining the students’ craftsmanship and attention to detail. Al Kasm’s mentorship helped the students strike a balance between creativity and marketability, equipping them with valuable skills that serve them in their future careers. His involvement also emphasized the environmental impact of fashion, reinforcing the importance of sustainability in design.
Participating in this upcycling initiative was a transformative experience for the students, enhancing both their technical and creative abilities. They gained hands-on experience working with different fabrics, solving design challenges, and understanding the intricacies of garment construction.
