For Balenciaga’s Winter 22 campaign, Demna Gvasalia enlisted a star-studded cast to highlight his creations – as his campaigns become almost as eagerly awaited as his runway shows. Gvasalia has continually used his position to comment on global issues, and his 360 collection is no different. The designer used Paris Fashion Week to focus on the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, global consumption, and global warming. To capture these images, Demna looked to Berlin-based photographer Daniel Roche.
The Cast
Balenciaga’s Winter 22 Campaign was shot in a glass dome, where models were presented with a theme of a future where the weather is controlled and simulated. The designer enlisted some A-list names to wear his collections, and Kim Kardashian, Alexa Damie, Big Matthew, Khadim Sock, and Kim Yeon-young, all feature.
The Collection
The HD sneaker is one of the standout pieces from the collection – alongside Balenciaga’s Trash Pouch. The sneaker is rendered as a sporty approach to some of the house’s moulded slip-on, with added technical touches to the lightweight shoe.
The collection is made up of several apparel pieces, as well as numerous accessories. The Crush Bag, Swing Bag, Trash Pouch, Knife Wader, and Glove Boot complement the seasons hybrid bodysuit dress, trompe l’oeil slip dress, towel top, XXXL hoodie and more from the collection.
The Campaign
Shot by Roche, key pieces from the Winter 22 collection feature on a backdrop of contradictory environments – layered pieces in the heat, and minimal dressing in the freezing cold. The campaign, as well as the collection, is meant to bring to light one of the greatest issues facing humanity: global warming. In a time of unprecedented changes in the environment, the Georgian designer is using his platform to bring this issue to the attention of millions of people worldwide.
The campaign is completed by a set of videos directed by Mau Morgo, that document the rapid changing of weather patterns from season to season through timelapse photography, while the looks remain constant.
