Thanks to Audemars Piguet (Instagram) and Marvel, Thursday night, May 25th, witnessed a captivating scene at the iconic Atlantis The Palm in Dubai, drawing the attention of curious onlookers. Against the backdrop of the city’s skyline, with the silhouette of the Burj Khalifa piercing the sky, one could almost imagine Spider-Man leaping towards the needle-like pinnacle. And guess what? That’s precisely what happened.
The event was a highly anticipated auction organized by renowned watchmaker Audemars Piguet, featuring their latest collaboration with Marvel. The new Royal Oak Concept ‘Spider-Man’ limited edition and a one-of-a-kind piece, were revealed during the event held in the highest tower of the Central Park Tower in Dubai. Featuring a cocktail created by 3 Michelin Star chef Björn Frantzén, a mesmerizing performance by free climber Alexis Landot and an exclusive DJ-set by Heron Preston, the evening was attended by clients, press and celebrities. The auction was followed live in several AP Houses around the world.
The unique Royal Oak Concept ‘Spider-Man’ was auctioned, alongside two other lots, in support of non-profit organizations First Book and Ashoka. These charitable organizations work towards inspiring young individuals to become agents of change. The total funds raised, amounting to $8.5 million, will further support educational programs initiated by the two NGOs in the United States two years ago.
Presented in a 42 mm titanium case contrasted by a black ceramic bezel and crown, the Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon ‘Spider-Man’’s openworked movement, Calibre 2974, reveals the superhero in his iconic red and blue suit. This limited edition of 250 pieces is accompanied by a unique piece, on which Spider-Man wears a black suit, referencing his appearance from select past comics, such as the 1984’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” #252. This lesser-known representation of the superhero gives the timepiece an element of mystique, as does the luminescent material, which glows green in the dark, used on the hands, hour-markers and part of the character.
Combining ancestral watchmaking know-how and cutting-edge technology, the Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon ‘Black Suit Spider-Man’ features a white gold case which has been decorated with a spider leg motif. The case is first laser-engraved to create the spider’s legs, which are then filled with luminescent hybrid ceramic. It is then polished and finely engraved by laser once more to form a spider’s web in the background. The case is combined with a black ceramic bezel and a black ceramic sapphire caseback which bears the inscription “Royal Oak Concept Unique Piece” in white.
Featuring a black and gray rubber strap with a titanium AP buckle, the Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon ‘Spider-Man’ comes with an additional black and red rubber strap, matching the iconic colours of Marvel’s superhero costume.
The collaboration between Audemars Piguet and Marvel commenced in 2021 with the “Black Panther” model. It showcased Audemars Piguet’s ability to draw inspiration from beyond the realm of high-end watches, particularly from pop culture and the entertainment world.
Accompanied by the slogan “With great power comes great responsibility,” this remarkable timepiece marks the departure of the charismatic CEO François-Henri Bennahmias from Audemars Piguet in late 2023. Hailing from the realms of golf and fashion, Bennahmias infused Le Brassus with a fresh wave of energy. Nestled in the serene Swiss valley of Joux, Audemars Piguet’s manufacture dedicates itself to crafting increasingly intricate complications amidst picturesque landscapes. The brand’s advertising campaigns often feature a sheep, symbolizing tradition interwoven with visionary aspirations. Audemars Piguet captivates future heirs, shaping the preferences of their predecessors and embracing an avant-garde mindset.
