Our latest instalment of which noughties trend to pick up for SS/23 brings us to denim. Yes, Denim is here to stay, and it comes with all kinds of silhouettes from Canadian Tuxedos and utility cargo jeans to baggy trousers that reference the early aughties, essentially bringing the cool factor back to denim.

The Trend

Across all major fashion weeks, Denim served as a staple. Remember Kate Moss walking Bottega Veneta’s show in what appeared to be a plaid flannel shirt paired with slouchy jeans? Or perhaps you saw Versace’s interpretation of the old-school denim jeans at its SS/23 show? The message is clear, get that dusty denim out of your wardrobe, it’s made its way back to the trend list.

Where have I seen it?

Denim is featured in some of the most well-known brands at every SS/23 fashion week. Major designers and fashion houses such as Diesel (obviously), Bottega Veneta, Versace, and Alaia. At Burberry, the material came in the form of maxi skirts, while Bluemarine cut oversized shirts in denim.

History

Denim is a type of cotton twill textile that was used for trousers. Denim or jeans were originally created from this fabric and manufactured in a French Town called Nimes (bleu de Nimes), where the name denim originates from. In the 1800s, during the Gold Rush, miners required clothes that were made from durable materials that would last longer. Levi Strauss a businessman teamed u with tailor Jacob Davis to supply miners with pants made from durable material. Throughout the 1900s the fabric became a style staple among the Hollywood elite, and in the 90s fashion houses such as Dolce & Gabbana, Versace and Dior had all added denim jeans to their collections. With the noughties style returning in 2022, denim has once again made its way back into the zeitgeist.

How Is It Worn?

There have been a few big style hitters that have been putting together denim ensembles of late. At Chloe RTW SS/23 the models walked the catwalk in denim from top to bottom, pairing a pair of baggy denims with a crop top made from the same material. The look was finished off with a long denim trench coat. Maison Alaia paired more fitted jeans with a sleeveless denim shirt and furry boots. Bally went full denim pairing a set of baggy washed jeans with a loosely fitted denim shirt – unbuttoned halfway down the torso.
