Prada called its Spring/Summer 2027 collection simply The Skirt. Across 63 looks presented in Milan, there were no trousers, shorts or dresses. Instead, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons took one of the house’s most familiar garments and tested just how many versions of it could exist.
There were pleats and pencil shapes, A-lines and wraps, distressed leather and technical fabrics, florals, crystals and skirts sliced open almost to the hip. Velcro became a base for crystal embroidery; cotton was treated to resemble leather or suede; crinoline moved from internal structure to visible decoration. Some skirts barely functioned as complete garments at all, reduced to panels wrapped around the body.
Yet the styling made the proposition feel surprisingly simple: skirt, tiny top, heels.
Again and again, substantial knee-length and midi skirts appeared beneath minuscule bralettes and bandeaux, leaving most of the torso bare. Elsewhere, the same skirts were worn with oversized knits, technical jackets, biker jackets and shirts, shifting their character completely.
The proportions are what stick. A fuller A-line skirt suddenly feels right again when everything above the waist has almost disappeared. A crystal-covered party skirt loses some of its ceremony beside a bra top. A pleated skirt can sit alongside a battered leather jacket without requiring much else.
There is history here. Miuccia Prada has long treated the skirt as one of her defining garments. In 2006, during the Waist Down – Skirts by Miuccia Prada exhibition, she described the skirt as being “like a T-shirt”: a recurring surface through which she could work through different ideas. Twenty years later, Prada and Simons have returned to that premise for an entire collection.
Spring 2027 may have contained dozens of answers to what a skirt can be, but its most persuasive styling idea requires only two pieces.
Tiny top. Great skirt. Done.
