As Vacheron Constantin (Instagram) marks its 270th anniversary in 2025, the iconic watchmaker takes a moment to reflect on a journey that began in 1755. From a modest workshop in Geneva under the skilled hands of Jean-Marc Vacheron to becoming a name synonymous with technical mastery and artistic brilliance, the Maison’s legacy is a testament to perseverance and passion. Over the centuries, Vacheron Constantin has evolved while staying true to its heritage, combining innovation with elegance to create timepieces that defy the limits of precision and design.

This milestone anniversary kicks off with a reissue of a timeless classic: the Historiques 222, this time in stainless steel. First introduced in 1977, this watch was a bold step into uncharted territory and has now been reimagined for a new generation.

“Since the turn of the century, Vacheron Constantin has taken each decade anniversary as an opportunity to talk about its history and the values handed down through the centuries,” said the House’s Heritage Director, Christian Selmoni.

Vacheron Constantin’s journey began at a time when Geneva thrived as a hub of watchmaking excellence. The Maison’s founder, Jean-Marc Vacheron, signed his apprenticeship contract in 1755, laying the foundation for a brand built on knowledge-sharing, innovation, and craftsmanship. From pioneering horological advancements to crafting bespoke masterpieces for royalty, the brand has continued to set benchmarks.

Some of its most recent legendary creations include the American 1921. As wristwatches replaced pocket watches, Vacheron Constantin launched the iconic watch, which represented an avant-garde design for the U.S. market. Reflecting the spirit of the Roaring Twenties, its cushion-shaped case, tilted 45 degrees with a crown at 1 o’clock, allowed drivers to check the time effortlessly without lifting their hands from the wheel.

Each watch is a masterpiece of technical and artistic innovation, driven by the ethos encapsulated in François Constantin’s words: “Do better if possible, and that is always possible.”

Originally launched to mark the brand’s 222nd anniversary, the Historiques 222 redefined the sports watch category in 1977. Designed by Jorg Hysek, it departed from traditional styles, merging formality with sportiness in a design that felt fresh and daring. Its integrated bracelet, ultra-thin Calibre 1120 movement, and signature Maltese cross symbol captured the zeitgeist of the 1970s.

For 2025, the Maison presents the Historiques 222 in stainless steel—a fitting homage to its heritage with a distinctly modern twist.

The new Historiques 222 Stainless Steel edition retains the timeless elegance of its predecessor while incorporating modern enhancements that elevate its functionality and design. The watch is housed in a 37mm stainless steel case with a beautifully redesigned integrated bracelet. Each link has been re-engineered for seamless comfort, and the triple-blade clasp ensures a secure yet refined fit on the wrist. The bracelet’s satin-brushed finish catches the light, creating a subtle interplay of textures that adds to its sophistication.

One of the standout features of this re-edition is the transparent sapphire caseback that reveals the in-house Calibre 2455/2 movement, an ultra-thin marvel of modern engineering. The oscillating weight is engraved with the iconic 222 logo and bordered by a fluted motif that echoes the bezel’s signature style. Precision is also enhanced, with the movement operating at a higher frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour), compared to the original model’s 2.75 Hz, ensuring greater accuracy and stability.

With the dial, vintage charm meets contemporary functionality. The blue hue is striking yet understated, with baton-style hands and markers coated in Super-LumiNova for visibility day or night. The off-white lume glows lime green in the dark, a subtle tribute to the tritium used in historical timepieces. The date window has been strategically repositioned to maintain harmony with the dial’s layout, ensuring clarity and balance in every detail.

The finishing of the Historiques 222 is a testament to Vacheron Constantin’s commitment to craftsmanship. The bezel, crown, and bracelet feature a combination of vertical satin-brushing and polishing, highlighting the Maison’s unparalleled attention to detail. The result is a watch that feels as contemporary as it is timeless, making it a versatile accessory for every occasion, from formal events to casual outings.

Despite its nods to the past, the 2025 edition of the 222 firmly belongs to the present. Its refined design, ergonomic upgrades, and precision engineering make it a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

The reissue of the Historiques 222 Stainless Steel Watch is a celebration of Vacheron Constantin’s enduring legacy and its unwavering pursuit of excellence. Weaving the past and present together, the Maison pays homage to its history while setting the stage for the next chapter of its journey.
