At Watches and Wonders 2026, Cartier does not present a watch in the traditional sense. Instead, it offers an object, one that exists between jewellery and timekeeping. With Myst de Cartier, the Maison returns to one of its most enduring signatures: mystery, not as complication, but as design philosophy.

At first glance, Myst de Cartier reads as a bracelet. There is no visible clasp, no obvious beginning or end. The structure is composed of articulated elements, almost like beads, creating a trompe-l’œil effect that challenges the eye. It is only upon closer inspection that the dial reveals itself, integrated seamlessly within the composition, as if time itself were embedded into the jewel.
This ambiguity is intentional. Cartier approaches the piece as a sculpture, where volume and movement take precedence over function. As the Maison’s Image, Style and Heritage Director Pierre Rainero notes, the design draws from the flamboyant jewellery watches of the 1930s under Jeanne Toussaint, where pieces were conceived as bold, sculptural statements rather than instruments.

The dial itself plays into this tension between presence and disappearance. A geometric pavé surface sits beneath a domed crystal, framed by onyx and punctuated with a single triangular hour marker. Around it, alternating curves create rhythm, enhanced by lines of black lacquer that are hand-painted one by one, adding graphic contrast to the brilliance of diamonds.

What appears effortless is in fact highly constructed. The bracelet requires extensive research and development to achieve its flexibility and fluidity, with each section carefully engineered to move as a single entity. The bead-setting technique, using stones of varying sizes, creates depth and architectural tension, requiring around 30 hours of meticulous work.
Cartier pushes this idea further with a fully diamond-set version, where the structure dissolves into light. In this monochrome interpretation, forms appear and disappear depending on how the piece is viewed, reinforcing the idea of mystery not as a hidden mechanism, but as a shifting perception.

Ultimately, Myst de Cartier is not just about telling time. It is about questioning how time can be seen, worn, and understood. By removing visible constraints like clasps and traditional watch codes, Cartier creates something more instinctive, a piece that wraps around the wrist like a talisman, carrying both protection and presence.
At Watches and Wonders 2026, while others refine mechanics, Cartier refines perception. Myst de Cartier is not a watch you read. It is one you experience.
