Olivier Rousteing presented his latest Balmain collection for the SS/23 season at Paris Fashion Week, in one-of-a-kind festival celebrating the best in food, music and fashion. This year, Balmain’s festival hosted over 10,000 friends of the house and came with several surprises, one of which saw none other than Cher walking the runway. Amongst the many show-stopping moments, Balmain’s collaboration with Egypt’s Okhtein, is one that caught our eye.
Okhtein worked with Rousteing and Balmain to create a one-of-kind bustier crafted from worn-out resin. Cairo-born sisters Aya and Mounaz worked with the French house to create a bustier that represented Rousteing’s inspiration for the show – the rebirth of the Renaissance. The idea was that ancient pieces can be adapted to modern times, and the result was a beautiful piece of wearable art.
The bustier, which was styled with a brass snake bangle – also featured a postiche, emphasising the contrast of old and new. Merging these elements depict a rebuild of ancient masterpieces into a wonderful relic that pays homage to the inspiration of Rousteing’s SS/23 collection. The bag also references Egyptian alabaster tone and its unique translucent qualities which had become iconic through ancient Egyptian vases and artworks.
“This piece was the most challenging project for both of us, however we found it as an opportunity to push ourselves as designers and product developers. We are grateful for our team and for the factories we work with, for bringing this piece to life,” the sister shared.
While Okhtein may still be a young brand, it has garnered worldwide recognition, counting stars like Beyonce, Kourtney Kardashian, and Cardi B among its admirers. With the stamp of approval by celebrities with massive star power, and now its collaboration with Balmain, Okhtein’s handbag has become an established and desirable handbag label for trendsetters across the world.
