The Essence of Emirati Art: Abstraction and Reflection
This Is Yung

As the pulse of contemporary art beats ever louder in the Middle East, the Bassam Freiha Art Foundation (BFAF) (Instagram) has unveiled a series of exhibitions this October that promises to captivate and challenge the perceptions of art enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. Set against the backdrop of Abu Dhabi, these exhibitions will explore the intricate tapestry of Emirati abstraction, the allure of Orientalist art, and the thought-provoking realm of monumental sculptures.

Hour Eternal – Emirati Abstraction

Kicking off the artistic journey is Hour Eternal – Emirati Abstraction, a meticulously curated exhibition that spans two decades of abstract art, showcasing the contributions of 14 Emirati artists who have significantly shaped the contemporary art landscape in the UAE. Under the expert guidance of Dr. Michaela Watrelot, this exhibition is a deep dive into the dualities of time, tradition, and personal experience, all encapsulated within the fluidity of abstract forms.

Art lovers will be treated to an array of works that reflect the ongoing dialogue between modernity and heritage. Featured artists include the influential figures known as ‘the five’—Hassan Sharif, Hussain Sharif, Mohammed Kazem, and Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim—whose works will be pivotal in this exploration. Alongside these pioneers, artists like Abdul Qader Al Rais, who blends vibrant colors with Arabic calligraphy, and Mona Al Khaja, who incorporates architectural motifs, will offer an insight into the enduring spirit of Emirati culture.

Visions of the Orient

In tandem with Emirati abstraction, the Visions of the Orient exhibition will showcase a selection from the private collection of H.E. Bassam Freiha himself. With over 50 years of curation, Freiha’s collection presents a fascinating look at Western interpretations of the Orient, featuring works from notable artists like Rudolphe Ernst and Fabio Fabbi. This exhibition not only highlights the romanticized views of the East but also serve as a window into the rich cultural interactions that have shaped perceptions across continents.

Boundaries and Lines from Letters by Tarek Elkassouf

In the Annex Gallery, Tarek Elkassouf presents his thought-provoking sculptural series Boundaries, which consists of 29 limestone sculptures embellished with 22k gold. These works invite viewers to reflect on the intangible societal barriers that govern our interactions and perceptions, urging a contemplation of the delicate balance between limitation and liberation. Complementing this, Lines from Letters offers an intimate glimpse into Elkassouf’s creative process through early concept drawings and writings, framing the sculptures in a narrative that is as compelling as the art itself.

Sculptural Marvels in the Sculpture Garden

The Sculpture Garden features the awe-inspiring works of world-renowned artist Anthony James, known for his innovative use of internally mirrored icosahedrons. These pieces explore the cosmos and the intersection of science and philosophy, compelling visitors to engage with the infinite reflections of shape and form.

To enhance the visitor experience, BFAF is also rolling out an educational program that runs concurrently with the exhibitions. This initiative, led by newly appointed Art Educator Emilie Dubois, will include artist-led workshops, talks, and lectures, ensuring that the dialogue around these exhibitions continues to flourish.

In sum, from October 14th to mid-February, the Bassam Freiha Art Foundation will not only showcase art but will also foster a critical discourse that explores the intersections of identity, culture, and artistic expression. This is an invitation to step into where tradition meets modernity. Don’t miss out on this celebration of Emirati art and culture. For more details, visit bfaf.ae.
